Who is Dhananjaya?
Dhananjaya Walallawita — known to some as ‘Dhana’ or as ‘Jay’ — is a British Asian writer whose storytelling is as layered and textured as his own journey. Born and raised in Sri Lanka, now living in the English countryside with his family, Jay draws deep inspiration from his roots. His writing is richly informed by a life lived between cultures, shaped by the island rhythms of his childhood and the quiet rustle of English countryside.
By day, Jay is a Marketing technology and operations expert with over ten years of experience in the tech industry. By night — when the world is asleep and silence reigns — he writes; or learns; or builds; or at least dreams. The ticking in his brain never stops; it’s always pushing him to create, make, mend, or master something new.
Studying in Singapore Dhananjaya worked as a freelance copywriter in advertising—writing jingles and scripts for TV, radio, and print. That chapter opened the door to a creative life on stage, performing across Southeast Asia as a singer-songwriter under the name ‘Dawn Jay’. His work in music continues to shape his writing voice: lyrical, expressive, and rooted in emotion and rhythm.
Fast forward to current day, Jay channels that creative energy into fiction, often writing late into the night with a comedy show looping in the background — not so much for laughs, but for comfort, like an old friend talking in the next room. In those quiet hours, when the countryside hums with nocturnal mystery, Jay finds his clearest thoughts and most honest words.
Above all, he’s now a father. And being “Dad” is his proudest title. The cute words “my clever, clever daddy” and “Dad can fix that” are the highest praise he could ever hope for — and the joy that fuels every part of his life. Every story he writes, every skill he learns, and every problem he solves is, in some small way, a love letter to his daughter’s world and the future he hopes to build for her.
